Gladys Aylward

Gladys Aylward was called to serve the Lord in China, but when she applied to a mission board, they said she wasn't qualified. She worked as a maid, saved her wages, and went on her own by rail through Europe and Russia to China in 1932. Working with an older missionary, Gladys learned the language and opened an inn for muleteers. After feeding the men, the women told them Bible stories. Gladys' first convert was a muleteer.
When the Japanese invaded China in 1940, she led one hundred children over a mountain range to safety. (Her adventures were depicted in the movie The Inn of the Sixth Happiness starring Ingrid Bergman.) Later, she worked in an orphanage in Taiwan.
After many successful years in China, Gladys said,"I wasn't God's first choice for what I've done in China...There was somebody else...I don't know who it was-God's first choice. It must have been a man-a wonderful man...Perhaps he died. Perhaps he wasn't willing...And God looked down...and saw Gladys Alyward."
God is looking for people to do His work. While you may feel unqualified for the job God has for you, don't worry about your qualifications. Whether you're called to stay at home and pray, raise a godly family, or go to a third world country, God always equips those He calls.

I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap...but I found none.
